February 2025

Man! This has been a heck of a year already.

We spent the first half of the month still sick. The flu really kicked us hard. It took almost 3 weeks for us to start feeling somewhat normal.

Then the weather came for us. One day, it was 60° and rained hard all day/night. So much rain that the river was out of its banks and almost to the road. The next morning, we woke up to snow, followed by bitter cold. Needless to say, it was a huge mess.

Little Man missed some school and speech…which he definitely needed as his allergies reared up and he was a miserable, sneezing mess. He did get to enjoy some sledding though.

I had a quick OB appointment which took longer to drive to than actually be at…but at least I got to have lunch with the Mister.

We skipped the Lunar/Chinese New Year celebration this year since none of us were feeling up to it yet. We did manage to celebrate Valentine’s Day with dinner out, but we waited until a couple of days later.

Little Man got to celebrate Valentine’s Day at school and even got to make his own box (mommy covered it with his choice of construction paper and helped cut the letters, he decorated with stickers).

He made some beautiful valentines for us!
He even wrote in the card. *name covered*

That weekend, Little Man went to a classmate’s mermaid birthday party. Boy, it was quite the setup! I thought I was over the top in decorating for birthdays, but no way. It was a beautiful time!

I finally got around to posting about Baby Girl on social media for those who were interested. It wasn’t my best effort, but putting it off wasn’t going to get the word out to those we had waited to tell.

We posted the same day we announced Little Man’s announcement 5 years ago.

The rest of the month was fairly quiet, with only the monthly growth scan at the high-risk office.

Baby Girl is up to 2.3lbs and is measuring in the 51st percentile. We go back to high-risk in 4 weeks then start weekly visits 2 weeks after at 30w.

We rounded out the month with a few days of gorgeous weather so we spent a lot of time in the backyard and opened the windows.

Indie enjoyed trying to bite tires.
Fighting over a branch.
The cats all appreciated the open windows.

March will bring a school field trip, spring photos, and a dentist appointment for Little Man and a handful of OB/high-risk appointments for me. The Holi celebration at Cheekwood is coming up as well, though I’m not sure if we’ll attend this year. We’ll see as we get closer to time. I’m finding that this pregnancy is rougher on my body than before, so our constant running has started to wear me down. Definitely Baby Girl’s way of telling me I need to take more breaks. Luckily, I have very little planned for the next couple of months.

Until then,

January 2025

What a beginning to the new year.

I feel like this month simultaneously sped by and dragged on. It’s a weird sense of dejá vu.

We kicked off with our usual Home Depot workshop and Little Man started back to preschool.

We had our first snow day of the year and the Mister got to spend it sledding with Little Man.

We didn’t get near the amount of accumulation we were predicted but still enough for 2 days of sledding before it melted.
He wore the hill out!
Snow angel!

I spent most of the month running between doctor visits and the pharmacy. We had our first high-risk appointment and got the anatomy scan of Baby 2.

Baby is right on schedule and all was well!

It was such a comfort being able to see her (yes, we got confirmation she’s a little girl!) and know she is doing well. She was very active and weighed in about 8oz at 19w3d.

We also got to see her at the end of the month for a growth scan (she’s still right on track at 1lb3oz at 22w3d and is in the 65-66th percentile) will continue to go for those every 3-4 weeks until delivery.

In between, I met with my regular OB on post and between the two clinics, we opted to up my blood pressure medication a little bit as well as increase my baby aspirin and add magnesium oxide for my ongoing headaches. So far, the changes seem to be helpful.

Little Man had his Lowes workshop and received a new hard hat with a special badge for his apron. We will definitely need a new apron for this year’s workshops.

Preschool and speech have been keeping us busy. We’re seeing lots of progress with pronunciation and intelligibility, and Little Man has started to memorize his phone number, address, and birthday.

Fun with classmates
Indoor snowball fight!
Lego silliness
Playdoh for the letter P week.
Pancakes and pajamas.

Unfortunately, we finished out the month with the whole family testing positive with the flu! Despite having gotten the flu shot, we have all felt awful for about a week plus now. I am ready for it to take a hike! It’s been so miserable.

Urgent care confirmed: influenza for the whole family.

The cough has been far and away the worst of it. My ribs and abs are so sore from all the coughing and nose blowing. Nothing has helped, though I’m hopeful we’re on the downhill. Thankfully, Little Man seems to have gotten the least of it, though he sounds awful. We’re anxiously awaiting better days.

February will hopefully bring some relief. We don’t have much planned. If the weather is nice enough (and if we feel better), we have tickets for the Lunar/Chinese New Year festival in Nashville, and that’s it. Nothing else is planned apart from OB appointments, speech, and preschool. We will maybe go out for Valentine’s Day (honestly, it’s hard to plan for anything when we feel this crumby!). We’ll see!

Until then,

December 2024/End of Year

And so 2024 is a wrap.

Every time I do one of these, I wonder where the year went. It feels like every month was a marathon and we still sprinted to the end.

December was (as always) a busy few weeks, but not in terms adventuring. There was a lot of running around and cleaning last minute before the festivities.

The first saw our super last minute family photos.

Photo credit (as always) to Briana aka The Lovely Rose Photography and Design Co

The first full week brought Santa to visit at preschool, the monthly potluck on post (though I took no photos of it), our professional Santa photos, the Home Depot workshop, and the Lighted Christmas Parade.

Little Man enjoyed seeing Santa twice in a row.
Five Santa visits now with the same Santa. They are thick as thieves.
Christmas Around the World was the theme.

The 2nd week wrapped up preschool for the year with a Christmas party and the Christmas program.

Pajama party!
Little Man wasn’t keen on participating in the singing or dancing.

We finished off that week with taking the dogs for Santa photos at Petsmart. It was a nightmare. The girls didn’t do very good at all, but at least no one slipped a collar and ran out of the store like last year.

Indie is just getting worse with photos and Roxie is definitely feeding off that energy.

The 3rd week calmed down enough for us to get the house picked up for my parents to visit. They weren’t planning to come but a last minute change in plans brought them to us.

Christmas week brought my parents to visit and along with them: way too many treats. I ended up making hot cocoa blossom cookies, cool whip cookies, and wrangled some character sugar cookies. My mom added peanut clusters, cherry mash, peanut butter fudge, popcorn balls, peanut brittle, caramel popcorn, chex mix, and a cheese ball. We’re slowly working our way through everything.

Oreo cookie balls decorated by Little Man and Nana.

On Christmas Eve, Little Man left Santa cookies and milk and carrots for the reindeer on the plate he made at school.

He was thrilled seeing it the next morning.

We also opened our gifts from Grammys and Gramps. Safe to say, he loved his hard hat.

Christmas morning was fruitful and just as exciting for all of us.

A smaller haul this year.
Helping Nana open her gift.
Little Man picked out the pillow special for Grandad.
Daddy was excited for his Mr. Ballen signed book.

That night, we headed to the speedway to see the lights.

Always a fun show.

The last night of the visit brought us to Nashville to see Zoolumination for the 3rd year. We are glad Nana wasn’t so sick this year to be able to see it. Despite it being packed with people, it was still a beautiful display.

These last few days have been slow and easygoing. I haven’t gotten the decor taken down/put away, but it’s on my list once I can motivate myself.

As I’m reflecting back on the year, 2024 has really been a crazy ride.

In January, we took on Little Man’s adenoidectomy and played in our only real snowfall of the year.

February saw classroom valentines, sickness, and our 2nd Chinese/Lunar New Year festival.

March brought our first Holi festival, the first classmate birthday party, and our 2nd Spring Art Hop.

April was spent outside in the beautiful weather.

May gave us the Northern Lights over Tennessee, Little Man’s very own library card, and reuniting of old friends through music.

June brought us lots of family visits, 4th birthday fun, and first swimming lessons.

July had fireworks, carnivals, and a sunflower festival.

August was for monster trucks, starting a new school year, and a long visit to Nebraska without Daddy.

September brought another Highland Games and pow wow, a first school field trip, and a playdate with a best friend.

October gave us a very special wedding, seeing a favorite podcaster live on tour, and trick or treating in another state.

November gave us another disc golf tournament and a sneak peek at a wonderful new addition.

Baby Waid #2 is due at the end of May.

We waited until after the first trimester (and then some) to tell our immediate families — sorry we kept it from you until now! I was nauseous and exhausted for most of it, and over the last few weeks, I have finally started to feel a bit better. The heartburn is my biggest foe currently, just like it was with Little Man.

We go for our anatomy scan on the 7th of January, though bloodwork has already told us the sex: a girl! I’m still very anxious about this pregnancy, so I will probably hold off on putting anything on social media for a bit longer (so if you read this, please keep our secret until we are ready to officially announce).

This new year is going to bring so many new and wonderful changes. Little Man will finish up preschool, the Mister will officially retire from the Army, and I’m sure there are many new adventures to be had.

We’re looking forward to the next chapter. Here’s to 2025.

Until then,

November 2024

And so another month has come to pass. I’m not exactly sure where all the time went, but it certainly got away from me.

After we got back from our whirlwind trip to Colorado, we sprinted headlong back into our routine and then some.

We got to see some of the wedding photos and they turned out fantastic!

Wedding party

Right after we got home, Roxie had to go to the vet for her updated heartworm and bordetella shots and that was after Little Man had speech.

She also celebrated her 2nd birthday.

Ignore the mess, we have a 4 year old and no room…and I’m an awful housekeeper.

Preschool was closed for election day and I had a doctor’s appointment so Little Man tagged along and got to hang out with the Mister while I did labwork etc…then we went to vote.

Then, the Mister took his annual trip to Texas for the disc golf tournament with other SRU warriors.

He did the usual glass blowing, plant potting, and, of course, disc golfing.

Winner winner!
A new Norfolk pine for our collection.
Cave visit

The rest of the month kept Little Man busy with school, a classmate’s birthday party, and an odd end of the month Home Depot workshop (two this month).

Preschool was full of fall learning and Thanksgiving fun.

Making beaded centerpieces.
Practicing writing his name
Games in the classroom.
Thanksgiving feast.
Birthday party piñata fun.

Home Depot had two workshops this month. Since we only physically attended the latest one, we were excited to get to build/paint.

Cocoa mug workshop.

Thanksgiving came and went without much fanfare as my mom didn’t get to visit this year. Still, I cooked the big meal and we all ate too much and took long naps.

December might look a little different too. From the sounds of it, no one is traveling so we’ll enjoy what is likely our last Clarksville Christmas solo. As usual we have Santa photos for Little Man scheduled and quick snaps for the pups as well.

We’ll have Little Man’s Christmas party and program at preschool and will likely check out the German Christmas Market as well as Zoolumination at the zoo. Nothing too extensive since things are a bit tight budget-wise this year. We’ll still make the most of our time together — as we always do!

Until then,

October 2024

Oh boy. October was not our normal October. No pumpkin patch, no Dia de Los Muertos festival, no Oktoberfest, no GHOST at Austin Peay.

Instead, we packed up our tiny car and headed out to Colorado for my baby sister’s wedding. But, before we get into that, let’s recap the rest of the month. It’s been chaotic.

The first week was spent at preschool and speech.

The next week, my in-laws came for a visit. The Mister and my father-in-law were able to finally get the roof on the back deck changed out and the ceiling fan up.

About 4 years in the making and it’s finally done!

We went to Lowes for the monthly workshop and Little Man got to get up close with a firetruck.

We wrapped up our visit and took the week to try to get ready for our long trek to Colorado.

Hugs for Grandpa and Grandma.

Of course, that week couldn’t be without some excitement. We got to see our favorite YouTuber/Podcaster mrballen live on tour in Nashville.

We had such a great time. mrballen is a fantastic storyteller.

As great of a night it was, #WaidLuck struck again. TDoT was repaving the lanes on I-24 and we hit a pothole in the only open lane and blew a front tire. After a few hours and a swapped out spare tire, we rolled home by 3am. Unfortunately, to get the busted tire fixed, I had to hustle to special order a new one and we weren’t sure it would make it before we needed to leave for Colorado.

Thankfully, the tire came and we were able to get it changed on the Thursday before we had to leave.

Little Man got to pick a pumpkin at preschool and they made Halloween cookies. I’m glad he got to have a little Halloween fun since he had to miss his costume parade at school.

We finally got on the road for Colorado on Sunday. We stopped at my parents’ place for the night before heading to Colorado Springs.

The wedding week was chaotic and stressful. I went to Painting with a Twist with Whitney and one of her other bridesmaids before we went to Evergreen to the AirBnB.

Not my best work but I’ve done worse.

The drive to Evergreen was frigid and it snowed the whole way. The road to the house was a bit scary, especially in the dark.

Thankfully, the snow subsided and the wedding day was beautiful and not too cold.

Such a gorgeous setting!
Recreating an old photo with my cousin Arin and Whitney.
Family photo!
The cape over the dress was perfect.

We even managed to go downtown to trick or treat for a little bit with Little Man. I didn’t take any photos (I was cold and exhausted), but he was the cutest Spiderman.

Photo from when we bought the costume.

We took off for Nebraska the next morning to break up our long drive home. We got back to mom and dad’s with enough time for a quick visit with Grammy and Gramps. I’m so glad we got to see them, even if it was just for a little bit.

They were so happy to see Little Man.

We made it home late on Saturday night, and boy, are done with travel for a while!

The rest of November should be much calmer. I don’t have anything planned for the month. I’ll probably cook for Thanksgiving, though I don’t know if we’ll have anyone but us.  Ready for a more relaxing month for sure.

Until then,

September 2024

We finally got settled back into a somewhat normal routine this month. That’s not to say we took it easy.

We finally got the Mister back home and we kept him hopping the first week back.

He and Little Man took a night out together that Friday while I got together with some girls I met through one of Little Man’s classmates from last year to paint some spooky pottery at the Pottery Room.

Isn’t she cute?

That first weekend was busy.

On Saturday, we headed to Hendersonville for the Middle Tennessee Highland Games (for the 3rd year in a row now).

Pipe and drums
Thanks to Clan Arthur for letting Little Man pull the sword from the stone.
Haggis pastry with neeps and tatties (mashed turnips and potatoes) and a classic sausage roll. So good!

Then Sunday, we attended the Trail of Tears PowWow (I think this was our 5th or 6th year attending in our 8 years here). The weather was perfect for both and we enjoyed ourselves.

Shawl dance (my favorite)
Part of Grand Entry.
Bison Navajo taco on frybread.

I had to deal with some more car issues the following week. The Dart had a slow leak in one of the tires. It was covered from when I bought the tires but they wouldn’t let me make an appointment to get fixed (because apparently they don’t do that except for installs), so I scheduled an oil change and my friend Kimberly came to get me for lunch/antiquing while we waited. Hopefully now, we’re done with all that car crap.

The next weekend, Little Man and I got together with one of his classmates for a play date at Sunny Day Studios.

Playing in the Halloween-themed sensory bin
Plexiglass easel painting.

We also met up with some of the Mister’s friends he met in Texas to go bowling with their families on post. Little Man enjoyed it immensely. I’m also thrilled the Mister made a conscious effort to keep up with these new friends who can understand/relate to his time in treatment.

Bumpers and a ramp but he carried that ball all by himself.
Getting tips from daddy.

The following week, Little Man took on the dentist and got a haircut in time for school pictures.

First time with x rays and using the dental tool toothbrush. He did excellent and had no cavities!
New ‘do. He wasn’t keen to get a haircut but daddy got him ice cream after.
Sneak peek behind the scenes for picture day at preschool.

The rest of the month was low-key.

Little Man had his first field trip to Historic Collinsville – a late 1800s reconstruction outside of town. It was a bit advanced for his age group, but he enjoyed a few aspects like making a cloth doll and turning cream into butter.

Checking out the cobbler shop
Butter making
Ringing the school bell

We had planned to attend Oktoberfest at Beachaven, but Hurricane Helene brought a boatload of rain all the way to Clarksville. Normally, we wouldn’t mind a bit of rain, but fall temperatures also made an appearance and standing out in the rain when it’s cool in a drindl and lederhosen is not my idea of a good time.

October will bring some adventures! My in-laws are coming for a few days, we have tickets to see Mr. Ballen on tour in Nashville, and at the end of the month, we travel to Colorado for my baby sister’s wedding. I’m sure we’ll squeeze a few more things in there (that’s how we roll).

Until then,

August 2024

What a month.

Not our typical month by any stretch as our family spent most of it apart for the first time in a long time. The Mister left for Texas for the Mission Resiliency treatment center for his PTSD and was gone for the month.

We started off with a short visit from Nana and Grandad for the Hotwheels Monster Truck show (Little Man’s birthday present).

Thanks Nana and Grandad!
5 Alarm was Little Man’s favorite
He was so excited to see it up close and meet the driver.

The next day, we hit the lake at Kentucky Dam Marina with the whole crew (even my parents’ dogs).

This was Roxie’s first time on the water.
She did really well and took to the water better than I thought she would.
Little Man was much more confident with his life jacket on.

My dad headed home on the 5th and took my cats so my car wasn’t so crowded. Then, after I took the Mister to the airport, my mom, Little Man, Roxie, Indie, and I all loaded up the Dart and headed to Nebraka for a couple weeks anticipating my dad’s hip surgery.

We spent the first couple of days recovering from the long drive, then went out to Grammys and Gramps’s to pick sweet corn and spend some time with them.

Gator rides with Gramps.
Had to see how much he’s grown in the tractor tire.
Trying a real kolache from Wilber’s Czech Days.

Mom and I froze so much sweet corn during this trip. I took home 17 quart bags full myself. I think we ended up with almost 50 bags total.

This is SO much better than storebought.

The first weekend saw pedicures and some shopping (not that I needed to spend any more money than I already do), but no photos of that.

We went back to Grammys and Gramps’s quite a few times for fishing a couple times and kite flying.

Grandad helping Little Man learn to use his pole. My Grandad helped me do the same when I was about his age. I’m so thankful my dad can pass that on.
We had a heck of a time catching much, but that catfish was big!
Flying a kite with Gramps was one of my favorite memories growing up, so having Little Man do the same is so special.
Grammys playing catch with a beach ball was quite the hit.

Little Man even got to see the grain truck getting filled with corn with the auger too with cousin Scott.

Telling Scott his “Toilet” joke.
Picking up corn from the truck.
I think all three had a wonderful time together.

Nana and Little Man enjoyed lots of time playing too, though neither thought it was enough.

He was very proud of himself for climbing the spiderweb.
I think Nana time is his favorite.

About 2 days before my dad’s surgery, the doctor called and said his kidney bloodwork wasn’t up to par so surgery had to be postponed. Needless to say, he was NOT a happy camper. Thankfully, he was able to finally get it done at the very end of the month. He called to tell me how much better he already felt a few hours after surgery, saying he was able to climb 6 stairs without any pain.

That weekend, we packed in a ridiculous amount of things to do in a short time. We started our weekend off with our Lowes workshop. Since our usual Lowes had system issues, we weren’t able to get Little Man’s Senior Builder Badge for his 12th consecutive workshop. But! He received it while we were back in Nebraska. We even got his special toolbag ordered. It arrived back home about a week after we got back.

We rarely get to do these together but since Daddy wasn’t there, I got to help.
He was so excited to get his special badge.
He loves his new toolbag.

Then we met some of my friends at the Sunken Gardens. Little Man met a new friend Kate and they had a great time looking around. I had a nice catch up with my friends Tito, Tyler, and Erica too.

They both know the Bluey toilet joke and thought they were hilarious.
I really miss these guys!

Then, we finished up with a little more shopping. Scheels is always a fun time, though they have gotten pricey in recent years.

Can’t visit Nebraska without trying on a huge foam hat.
He was getting tired, so the taxidermy set up was a good distraction.

Then, I met with my friend Zak from college. Pretty sure it’s been about 10 years since I saw him in person last. It was a short visit, but so nice to catch up.

We finished our visit with one last trip to the farm for the Sturgeon full moon and one last visit with Grammys and Gramps.

After a grueling 12+ hour drive back to Tennessee, we slowly got back into some sort of routine. We met Little Man’s new teacher that Thursday and started back at speech Monday.

Then Tuesday was the first day of 4 year old preschool! Little Man had a rough start — the HVAC had some issues so he only got to be at school for 2 hours. He also didn’t get enough sleep, so lots of tears. Luckily, he enjoyed his first week back and is right on track.

Hard morning.
Better afternoon.

The last few days of the month were reserved for getting the pups bathed/brushed (they’re finally tuft free and smell better!) and hustling to finish some of the cleaning I wanted to accomplish before the Mister came home from Texas. Nothing like leaving things until the last minute!

We also squeezed in some Husker football viewing. It’s not Lincoln, but we can still look the part.

Go Big Red!

September is going to be an interesting month. Of course, we have the Highland Games and possibly the Trail of Tears Pow Wow, but there is also Little Man’s first real field trip, Oktoberfest, and maybe even Barks and Brews (weather pending — if it’s too hot, we won’t attend. Too chaotic for my girls). Then, I still need to get Little Man’s suit and my dress ordered for Aunt Whitney’s wedding in October. One day I’ll get a handle on my fall schedules…

Until then,

July 2024

Can you believe it’s almost time to start school again? Summer seemed to fly by and we’re speeding towards the end of the year.

We kicked off July busier than anticipated.

The first was my sweet Jack Jack’s 14th birthday!

Forever my lap kitty.

Then we had the 4th of July. We played with sparklers and went on post for the firework show.

Little Man was super interested in the fireworks this year. Every time we heard them go off, he’d drag one of us outside to see if he could see any (even in broad daylight).

His “cheese” face.

This year, post finally brought back the carnival, so we braved the heat and went for a few hours (and $150 later between arm bands, food, and games).

He experimented with his hat styles today.
Dart toss
He won a big cow from the water shooter race game.

Safe to say, he enjoyed it.

We wrapped up the first week with his Home Depot workshop.

The second week of the month brought a bit of a hiccup. My car’s battery decided to die and Little Man and I ended up stuck at the mall while we waited for the Mister to come jump it (we had the jump box, but the battery was dead dead and sucked the juice completely out). We bought a new battery and found out the one I had wasn’t even the right one for the Dart. I swear we’ve changed the battery more times than we ever should have for an 11 year old car, but it is what it is since it does have all the bells and whistles.

The upside came during the weekend, when we attended a sunflower festival at Red River Farms in Springfield.  It was blazing hot (seriously, one of the hottest days to date), but we had a nice time.

There were vendors (though we didn’t check them out — we were too worn out to trek back up the hill), tractor rides, helicopter rides, monster truck rides, and a pick your own sunflower patch.

Little Man loved the helicopter ride with Aeroluxe Aviation
He has been asking to ride on a monster truck since he got tickets to see the Hot Wheels Monster Truck show next month, so getting to ride in Predator Racing‘s truck was also a highlight.
We picked a bunch of sunflowers to bring home.
Little Man’s favorite part was getting to cut them down himself.

The last couple of weeks ended up being slower. My dad’s hip replacement surgery got rescheduled to August so he could get his teeth implants done first. We put off our visit until then so we can be back home for that.

We had a neighborhood kitty show up in our driveway and befriend us. He was very sweet.  He spent the night on the back porch (Hina got to come inside) out of the rain.

We started calling him Thackery.

I scheduled him a neutering appointment with the humane society, but there were no openings until September. I figure the $45 is worth not having new litters of kittens all over. He’s since wandered along, but I’ll keep the appointment just in case he decides to come back.

July certainly felt like it went on and on forever. We are looking forward to August, though it’s going to be a strange month.

My parents are coming down for monster trucks, then we are following them back to Nebraska so Little Man and I can be home for my Dad’s hip replacement surgery while the Mister is in Texas for therapy. We’ll get back in time for Meet the Teacher night for preschool and have a few days to get back into our routine before school starts back up. Before we know it, it’ll be September and the rest of the year is downhill.

Until then,

June 2024

Well…that was chaotic.

June barreled in, and by the time I resurfaced, it was July. And I can’t really say what made it so overwhelming.

If I was a betting lady, I’d say it had a whole lot to do with Little Man’s 4th birthday party.

But more on that later!

We kicked off with Taz’s 10th birthday. Holy cow, all of my cats are a decade (or more) old!

She’s so sweet, though still skittish.

Then…Little Man celebrated his 4th birthday!

This year’s theme was Blaze and the Monster Machines.
We changed things up by having it in the park instead of at our house.
He made a new fast friend with my former coworker’s kiddo Kai.
He even had 3 classmates attend!
Weird phone pixelation but of course Nana and Grandad came.
And Grandma and Grandpa!

The wind was a big pain in the butt so I didn’t have things as decorated as I wanted, but we made due.

I still haven’t recovered from all of the company! We are so thankful both sets of grandparents were able to come this year. Little Man really enjoyed all of the extra attention.

The following weekend, we did our Lowes workshop Saturday and then trekked down to Mount Juliet’s Walmart to see Monster Jam’s Grave Digger truck/driver. I don’t know much about the monster truck circuit but Little Man was in awe of how huge the truck was.

Of course, we had to go inside to buy a truck so one of the drivers (this one was Tyler Menninga) could sign it.
He is all about Grave Digger now.

For Father’s Day, we took the Mister to see a movie (ok, really, it was for Little Man – Inside Out 2) and gave him his gift.

Little Man was so excited to give Daddy his “very own fishing pole.”

We also got official word about the Mister’s retirement! Hallelujah! We have orders for 30 September 2025. Six more months than he’d originally put in for, but what’s another 6 months after 20+ years? We are thrilled to have that sorted after so much time in limbo.

The following week, I met up with an old coworker from APSU for a last minute lunch. Three hours later, we emerged. It was really nice to catch up after so long (four years when we live in the same town is ridiculous!). Definitely won’t wait that long for the next catch up.

Then, swimming lessons started! Little Man hasn’t really been in a real pool for any length of time, so it was definitely a learning experience. Of course, the first day, a storm rolled in right as they were getting ready to start. Lightning meant no pool time, and a safety day was done instead. The next night went better and he got to get in. We struggled a little bit with keeping focused. Another boy in his group was ignoring everything the guards said and kept getting out of the pool and distracting the other kids (Little Man included). We had to have a chat about staying in the water and only listening to the lifeguards.

First steps in the big pool.
Caught a smile, so I think he liked it!
Practicing his front starfish float.

Learning to float

Juneteenth, everyone had the day off. No speech and the Mister was off work. We did absolutely nothing, other than swimming lessons.

That weekend, I braved the heat to meet up with some old coworkers again for a catch-up. This time, Little Man stayed home with the Mister. I think we might have to keep this up. I forgot how nice it is to just chat with other adults besides my own family.

We capped off the month by finishing swimming lessons and Little Man getting his 4 year old check-ups/shots.

He did so well! He didn’t even cry when they poked him. He’s now 33.6lbs and 39.2 inches tall. Growing like a weed. He told me he was going to be brave and boy was he.

He also attended another classmate’s birthday party at We Rock the Spectrum. He enjoyed the huge indoor playground.

July is looking to be a slower month (knock on wood). I think it’s one of the few months where I don’t have much of anything planned.

My dad is having hip replacement surgery on the 24th so I’ll probably trek to Nebraska for a bit to help my parents and whatnot. I wanted to go when the Mister goes to Texas so I wouldn’t have to be solo with Little Man for those 4 weeks but I’m not sure any of that will happen.

We’ll figure it out as we go along!

Until then,

May 2024

This is an interesting month.

We kicked off with both Home Depot and Lowes having their workshops on the same day, which also fell on Free Comic Book Day.  Talk about full speed ahead!

Then we celebrated Roxie’s Gotcha Day. How has this little girl been with us a whole year?

That weekend, we were lucky enough to be able to see the aurora borealis this far south.  Unfortunately for me, Little Man and I went to bed around 10:30, so we missed it completely. Luckily, an old coworker snapped a couple photos.

We tried to go look outside again the next couple of nights, but the neighborhood lights (which rarely turn on) were on full display.

We got to see a little bit, but only via night mode on my phone.

Mother’s Day came and went without fanfare, but given the mental health situation of our household recently, I didn’t get my hopes up anyway. It is what it is and getting frustrated about it doesn’t do any good.

The following week was Little Man’s last week at preschool for the year. We had a family picnic one day and his spring program on the final day.

His class tie-dyed shirts for Family Picnic Day.
Subway picnic (glad Daddy got to come).
Bluey made an appearance!
Group!

His last day of school was super short with only the spring program on the agenda. Next year will be preschool graduation.

He enjoyed his teachers and they loved him.
He spotted us in the crowd.
One last class photo.

He didn’t sing or dance during his program and yawned a lot while looking around. We’ll have to work on that this summer. My plan is to keep his schedule similar on his normal school days with some Highlights workbooks and lots of outdoors time. We are also planning to hopefully get into swimming lessons next month to get him more used to the water (he is fine with splash pads and in the tub, but I want him safe around deeper water).

Routine will be key since I think the Mister is planning to go to the inpatient therapy after Little Man’s birthday. Though, we still don’t have anything set. We are crossing that bridge (and handling it) when we come to it.

Finishing off the last of our “normal” routine weeks, Little Man got to attend another birthday party for a classmate at Chuck E. Cheese. No one in our family had ever been to one before, so it was a new experience for us all!

Waiting for pizza and dip’n dots.

The rest of the weekend, we went to a $5 movie at Regal and took a short trip to the local library for the first time.

We got our very own library cards and Little Man even got to pick out what design he wanted on his. He is so excited to have a card with his own name on it for his wallet.

He loves the “rainbow” on his card
Putting on a puppet show in the children’s section.

We will plan to spend more time at the library now that school is out. We have the calendar for the summer and are starting the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge. I have no doubt we are already halfway there. We read between 3 and 5 books a night before bedtime, so it’ll be close by the time kindergarten rolls around in a year or two. It’ll be a fun project!

On the 21st, an old friend from high school was playing a show in Nashville. I decided to make the trek down to see him play. Since it was so late in the evening and we didn’t have a babysitter, I had to go solo.

I’m so glad I went. I hadn’t seen Jon Dell in 15+ years (we were still in college the last time we’d seen each other in person) and it was awesome to hear him play/sing live again. I have a couple of his vinyls and Little Man enjoys them too.

A few years older, but still a talented dude (as if that’d ever change)!

We were also treated to a surprise pop-up from the Rowan Brothers. It was so cool!

Such a treat!

On the 24th, the Mister and I celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary. We didn’t do much but did have a nice meal and even better dessert.

Tim Tam brownie was delicious.
He also brought me 11 roses — one for each year we’ve been married.

A windstorm ripped through over the long weekend, punching some holes in our porch roof and blew a bunch of branches down.  Clean-up wasn’t too bad, but we’re waiting for the insurance adjuster to come out and see what needs to be done to repair the roof and how much they’ll cover for that. It might be a blessing in disguise since the roof over the deck really needed to be replaced a while ago.

I’m glad I brought Hina in the night before on a whim.
Big branches everywhere.

The last week of the month was filled with panic cleaning for our company coming for Little Man’s birthday next month and a really unfortunate cold/allergy issue. I did not realize my nose could run so much constantly. It needs to hurry along out my system before the party because I am over it!

We also had our monthly potluck and the Mister won the disc golf portion of the individual games and his platoon won overall for the day. Not that his ego needs any more inflation, but he deserved the serotonin boost.

He just had to pose.

June will be a strange month, I think.

We kick off with Little Man’s 4th birthday (he even has several classmates attending as well as both sets of grandparents) then we may be trekking back to Nebraska if the Mister decides to go to Texas. It’s all up in the air, really. If not, I need to get swimming lessons sorted and start on Little Man’s summer learning routine. Either way, weird month ahead. We’ll see how it shakes out.

Until then,
